Air (Aer in ancient Greece)is primarily wet and secondarily hot. This element is deeply entwined with the rhyme and rhythm of our lives. The story of Air is how our breath and the breath of this planet unite in a life-giving cycle.

The relatively thin layer of gases we know as the atmosphere both protects and sustains us. We and all animals breathe in air, taking the oxygen for ourselves and breathing out the by-product, carbon dioxide. We use the oxygen to extract energy from our food, while plants take in the carbon dioxide. They use this to trap the energy of sunlight, which is then deployed to give off oxygen to complete this essential cycle.

The platonic solids associated with Air is the octahedron, a shape of symmetry and balance. The octahedron and the element Air were traditionally linked with practical use of metaphysical and spiritual principles so that the physical plane may be elevated along with the personal. Another developmental association is the attraction of those who can further support one's overall development as well as those whom one can also serve in a like manner.octahedron

Air is an element of Spring, the dawn and the unlimited potential they represent. It is fragrances carried on the wind, as well as flutes, whistles and song. It is also traditionally related to the mind, mental clarity and communication. Astrologically the Air signs are Libra, Gemini and Aquarius.

To truly know Air is to stand on a hilltop and feel the wind on your skin, to drink in its ethereal life, and to know its many moods, and its phenomenal power. It is this planet sized power we are tapping into when we evoke the element of air in our lives.

An Altar To Air

In the eastern part of your house, drape and decorate a table in pale blue, yellow and white. Offer feathers, dragonfly wings, pipes, pale blue stones, incense and herbs sacred to air. Invite the Element Air to make this space its home. Light candles and incense on this altar when you read or write or study.
